Diagnosis, Assessment and Treatment of OCD: A Primer for Professionals (St. Petersburg, FL)
October 14, 2017 at 8:00 am - 4:00 pm EDT
$50 – $85Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a highly debilitating illness. As many as 90% of people with OCD meet criteria for a comorbid disorder, most commonly an anxiety disorder. Two out of three individuals with OCD report severe impairment, yet individuals with OCD spend an average of almost 9 years before receiving a correct diagnosis and treatment. Fortunately, effective pharmacological and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) based treatments exist that help. The CBT approach with the most empirical support for its efficacy is exposure and response prevention (ERP). ERP is based on the principle of gradual in vivo or imaginal exposure to stimuli that evoke obsessional distress and the prevention of compulsive behavior.
The morning program will cover the nature of OCD and the theoretical foundation of CBT with regards to this treatment approach among adults. The afternoon program will focus on working with children with OCD and their families through a cognitive behavioral framework.
