What if poster
“what if?” is a film project that has come out of my own struggle with obsessive-compulsive
disorder (OCD) and anxiety. It is a collective telling of an experience, an audio-visual collage
consisting of hand-painted 16mm film, archival footage, audio samples from theoretical and
philosophical lectures and interview testimonies from therapists and people living with OCD.
The goal of the film is to articulate this commonly misunderstood struggle by giving voice to
those with the diagnosis as the experts of their own internal experience. The approach and
intention was to make a collaborative film that engaged and involved subjects to express
what they think is important to address in a movie about OCD. I wanted this film to invite
a larger discussion regarding the way we think about and treat mental illness in America,
and how this affects how it is experienced. I chose to include a critical thread throughout
the film that challenges our culture’s compulsive need to label, categorize, and diagnose
neurodiversity while at the same time honoring the importance treatment has on relieving
suffering from those living with a chronic disability.
