Narrative of Services:

Dr. Phillips offers expert evaluations for individuals with BDD and body image concerns; she has offices in both Providence, RI (the Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) Program at RI Hospital), and in New York City. These one-time evaluations consist of an in-depth assessment of BDD symptoms and co-occurring symptoms/disorders. Dr. Phillips provides feedback and treatment recommendations that are tailored to each patient and can serve as a roadmap for their current or future treatment. A detailed written report with treatment recommendations is given to both patients and treatment providers. Ongoing treatment is not provided as part of the evaluation. Dr. Phillips also provides outpatient treatment for adults and adolescents with BDD who live in the New York City area or in the Providence, RI area.

Training Description:

Katharine A. Phillips, MD, an internationally recognized expert on BDD, has provided specialty evaluations and treatment for BDD for more than 20 years. More than 200 of her research publications and book chapters focus on BDD. She has published The Broken Mirror: Understanding and Treating Body Dysmorphic Disorder (2005) and Understanding Body Dysmorphic Disorder: An Essential Guide (2009), and she co-authored a therapist treatment manual (Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Body Dysmorphic Disorder: A Treatment Manual). She has also authored other books on BDD, body image concerns, and obsessive compulsive and related disorders. Dr. Phillips has received numerous honors and awards for her research on BDD, including a Special Presidential Commendation from the American Psychiatric Association. She has repeatedly been included in Best Doctors in America, Who’s Who in America, and Castle Connolly’s America’s Top Doctors.
