Jim Sterner, MA, LMFT
Director, The Gateway Institute
Narrative of Services:
In November of 2008, I founded The Gateway Institute (TGI) specializing in the treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and related conditions in order to serve the greater Orange County region in Southern California. Each program is specifically tailored to the individual's needs and goals designed to lead a more fulfilling and prosperous life. Whether it is a 3-week intensive outpatient program, bi-weekly or weekly treatment, the in-depth clinical assessment will determine the most effective approach for each prospective patient. I use cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and exposure response prevention (ERP) as the overall treatment model. I treat children, adolescents, and adults, and I also work closely with neighboring psychiatrists in order to determine if medication is needed during the treatment process. Upcoming groups are being arranged, and they will be held on Thursday evenings.
I discovered my passion and interest in the treatment of OCD while studying psychology at the University of Maryland and Antioch University. This passion drove me to further studies at Phillips Graduate Institute in Los Angeles, California where I obtained my Master's Degree in Psychology in 2002, and focused my thesis on comparing various treatment modalities for OCD. Further deepening my experience and knowledge in OCD and other anxiety disorders, I refined my clinical skills by joining the Westwood Institute for Anxiety Disorders in Los Angeles in 2004 where I was mentored by Dr. Eda Gorbis. My expertise includes treating individuals with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder as well as other spectrum disorders, including panic disorder, PTSD, BDD, social phobia, GAD, and trichotillomania.
