Description:

Directed by Dr. Michael Greenberg, OCD Associates is a practice that specializes in the use of Rumination-Focused ERP to treat OCD.
Our approach to treating OCD is unique in two ways.
1) Rumination-Focused ERP vs traditional ERP:
RF-ERP sees the treatment of compulsive rumination as a key component of ERP, and discards the idea of habituation or desensitization. Rather than trying to maximize anxiety during exposures, our approach aims to minimize anxiety during exposures by eliminating compulsive rumination. This yields a gentler yet more precise approach to ERP.
2) A focus on emotional and relational factors
In contrast to approaches that see OCD as separate from the rest of a person or a mere neurological anomaly, our approach sees OCD as directly connected with the rest of who a person is and what they have experienced. We therefore integrate emotionally and relationally focused work within and alongside ERP, to address emotional and relational factors contributing to symptoms.
We work with many people for whom traditional ERP hasn’t worked, or has worked partially, including many people with ‘pure O’ and sensorimotor (somatic) OCD.
The combination of our rumination-focused approach to ERP and our emotional, relational perspective also allows us to work effectively with severe cases and complex cases. We are especially passionate about working with individuals with comorbid disorders (e.g., autism, ADHD, PTSD, eating disorder, BPD, OCPD).
In addition to OCD, we also treat other anxiety disorders, phobias, tics and body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs), as well as comorbid eating disorders.

Treatment of Co-occurring Disorders:

Rumination-focused ERP is a transdiagnostic treatment for all forms of OCD, anxiety disorders, and phobias. Treatment for all of these follows a standard overall protocol tailored to the individual person.

When treating OCD in the context of other disorders, such as depression, PTSD, eating disorder, or personality disorder, our approach starts with a functional (i.e., cognitive-behavioral) as well as emotional and relational (i.e., psychodynamic) analysis of how these problems are connected with each other and with the rest of who a person is and what they have experienced. Based on this analysis, we develop a treatment plan that integrates cognitive-behavioral and emotional-relational approaches.
