Lawrence Shweky LCSW
Our group practice is focused mainly on adolescents, though we do see some children and adults as well. Increasingly, our clients are presenting with OCD/OC Related Disorders and now comprise approximately 30% of our client population. I have personally treated over 40 clients with OCD during the last fives years in individual, group and family therapy.
I have been treating OCD for approximately five years, though I have been a therapist for 30+ years. I signed up for the BTTI after doing quite a bit of reading and learning on my own. The BTTI was extremely helpful and I am now in a consult group sponsored by IOCDF.
I have a long history of work with multicultural populations. For many decades, I worked in agencies and schools in marginalized neighborhoods with highly diverse clients. Currently, our practice is located in Davis, CA, an educated, middle class college town that is 50% white. However, the other 50% = is reflective of a diverse population ethnically and socio-economically, including many residents from outside the US.
In addition to working with multicultural populations, I have extensive experience with LGBTQ+ clients, primarily adolescents. As a clinical social worker, education around cultural competency was present from the beginning and has been a cornerstone of our field since its beginnings. I also have a Masters in Education from San Francisco State University which was highly focused on social justice and diversity. In addition, I have the lived experience of being an Arab-American and first generation college student.
I lead several therapy groups for adolescents that are based on an interpersonal framework, but helpful for many different types of issues including OCD.
