David L. Kupfer, PhD
Narrative of Services:
I work in private practice in Falls Church, Virginia. My specialties are OCD, Panic Disorder, Phobias, and other anxiety disorders. My approach to OCD is essentially CBT. I include Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, EMDR, and family therapy when helpful. I enjoy working with people who are washers, checkers, hoarders, hair-pullers, or just troubled by obsessive thinking. I think of most of my clients with OCD as good people who think they have to be better. I use exposure and response prevention to help clients make peace with the uncertainty and anxiety that comes with normal healthy living.
I have been a licensed clinical psychologist in Virginia since 1982, so I have over 30 years experience working full-time. During that entire period, I have specialized in treating OCD and related anxiety disorders. My training in behavior therapy for OCD began while I was a graduate student at the University of Georgia from 1976-1980. I have attended many training workshops held by experts in the field. I currently coordinate a monthly OCD supervision group (meeting in my office) including psychiatrists, psychologists, and others in Northern Virginia specializing in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for OCD.
