Denise Nelson PhD
My career has focused on treating OCD and other anxiety disorders. Over 20 years, I’ve treated over 1,000 people with OCD (mild symptoms to extremely severe). I also treat co-occurring mood and sleep disorders.
I believe education is key to successful treatment. Clients gain confidence in treatment and improve faster when they understand how and why techniques work. This knowledge helps them modify strategies if new symptoms emerge or existing symptoms worsen. My work is highly collaborative. I don’t apply a one-size-fits-all approach but truly listen to client needs.
Panic disorder, major depression, social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, phobias, sleep disorders (e.g., insomnia, narcolepsy).
I graduated from The University of Chicago with a B.A. before getting my doctorate in clinical psychology from UCLA, where I was trained by leaders in the field of anxiety disorders. For over 20 years, I have been on the faculty in the Department of Psychiatry at UCLA where I have helped to train many graduate students and psychiatry residents in the treatment of anxiety disorders. During this time, I’ve been a therapist and supervisor in the: UCLA OCD Adult Intensive Treatment Program, UCLA Child/Adolescent OCD and Anxiety Program, and UCLA Anxiety Outpatient Clinic.
Throughout my career, I’ve worked with individuals from a wide range of racial and ethnic backgrounds, sexual orientations, religions, genders, ages, and life experiences. I aim to create a safe and comfortable environment for everyone I work with.
