What better way to kick off the summer season than by walking with your family and friends to raise awareness for OCD and related disorders! Mark your calendars for Saturday, June 4th, 2016 and join the 1 Million Steps 4 OCD Walk in New England, Northern California, Georgia, Texas, or in your community!
The 1 Million Steps 4 OCD Walk is the first grassroots awareness-building and fundraising campaign to highlight obsessive compulsive disorder on a national level. The Walk allows us to reach out and start talking about OCD with family members, friends, and colleagues and encourages them to invite even more people into the conversation. For many, it is also an opportunity to share personal stories and shatter some of the misunderstandings and misperceptions of OCD and related disorders. By sharing experiences, we are both educating others about OCD and inviting them to join the OCD and related disorder community by supporting us in our efforts to raise awareness and make a difference. For many people, taking part in an event of this kind can function as a gateway to advocacy.
I have had the privilege of attending the Walks in Boston, Northern California, and Atlanta in the last few years, and I can say without a doubt that it is just plain fun! The sense of community is incredibly strong and the experience of walking together with others who understand OCD stays with you for days after the physical Walk is over.
Please join me and the entire OCD and related disorders community and walk with us on June 4th, 2016 in Boston, Oakland, Atlanta, and Houston — or start your own grassroots Walk with your family and friends in your own community.
It is FREE to register for the Walk, and if you raise or donate at least $25 before the Walk, you get your own commemorative Walk T-shirt.
Take a step and be part of #1Million4OCD!
If you are in the New England Area: Walk in Boston!
For the fourth year in a row, members of the OCD community, including individuals with OCD, family, friends, co-workers, and treatment providers will gather at historic Jamaica Pond for our flagship Walk. Last year, more than 300 people joined us. Some even brought their dogs! (Strollers are also allowed, and well-behaved dogs on a leash are welcome.)
If you are in Northern California: Walk in Oakland!
We are pleased to announce that our Northern California walk will now be co-hosted by OCD SF Bay Area and OCD Sacramento, and will take place in the Bay Area for the first time this year at beautiful Lake Merritt in Oakland, CA. We anticipate more than 200 members of the local community will join our Walk in the Bay Area!
The 2nd Annual 1 Million Steps 4 OCD Walk, co-sponsored by the IOCDF and OCD Georgia, will take place at Chastain Park in Northwest Atlanta. Members of the OCD community are invited to join us to meet others, raise awareness about OCD and related disorders, and raise funds to support the important work of OCD Georgia and the IOCDF.
And new this year, if you are in Texas: Walk in Houston!
Everything is bigger in Texas! The IOCDF is pleased to announce we are bringing the 1 Million Steps 4 OCD Walk to Houston, Texas in partnership with OCD Texas! The 1 Million Steps 4 OCD Walk in Houston will take place at Memorial Park, one of the largest urban parks in the United States. We anticipate that more than 200 members of the local community will join in our inaugural Walk.
Walk in Your Community
If you are not able to walk in Boston, Northern California, Atlanta, or Houston, you can join with hundreds of others who are part of the #1Million4OCD Virtual Walk in their own communities! It doesn’t have to be a large event — get your family and friends to meet up at a local park, school, or track, or just walk around your neighborhood. Simply register for the Virtual Walk, set up a Walk team, and invite your friends to join your team. It’s that easy! Then, walk with us on June 4th and share your photos on social media using #1Million4OCD to connect with other walkers around the globe.
If you raise or donate $25, you also get your very own Virtual Walk Kit!* The Virtual Walk Kit has everything you need to get your Walk started. The Kit includes a Walk T-shirt for you, stickers for all of your local walkers, and a pedometer to help plan your route!
* Virtual walkers must raise or donate $25 BEFORE May 6, 2016, in order to receive your virtual walk kit before the walk on June 4th. Those who raise $25 AFTER May 6th, will still receive a walk kit, but we cannot guarantee delivery in time for the walk on June 4th.
